Women’s Natural Defense Against the STD “Trich”

A new study appeared in the journal, Sexually Transmitted Infections has found that women have a natural defense against “Trich”, the most commonly contracted sexually transmitted disease.

Trich affects an estimated 174 million women and men around the world each year.  Almost half of people that have this condition, do not develop any symptoms and are not aware they are infected.  The other half may have symptoms that include, irritation and discharge, or pain.

Trich is caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis or T. vaginalis.  Women have a natural protective barrier that consists mainly of lactic acid bacteria — called lactobacilli which helps fight off the parasite.  The discovery could lead to new treatments for the disease according to the journal.
