WET Platinum silicone lubricant has been a long time customer and staff favorite, so I was super excited to take a 3.1oz bottle home with me over the weekend. Was it a one way ticket to pound town? Let’s find out!
OK, granted the hype was very strong with this lubricant. It’s received lots of positive feedback and rating from consumers, a ton of repeat sales, and it’s recommended by many a lube lover here at Condom Depot headquarters. So, maybe I went in expecting a little too much from this lube.
Nevertheless, I think packaging lube in a bottle which properly seals is key, no matter how wonderful the lube is that leaks out left and right. Even before I got to use it, simply popping open the cap caused an eruption of lube droplets to shower down onto my clothing and bedsheets, leaving high contrast droplets on anything porous, even an unstained wooden art piece I have in my bedroom. The sheer force required to push down the flip top (after removing the inner safety seal) prompted me to use two thumbs to fully depress the cap downwards and this caused the lube to fly up out of the bottle and downpour onto its surroundings.
But, hey, since I was already a hot mess, I went ahead and tried it out on myself. There was no stickiness, tackiness or allergic reaction on my part and I really enjoyed the fact that it is both odorless and tasteless. The consistency is a bit thin for my taste, but it was long-lasting and it made my skin feel supple without causing a rash or acne to develop afterwards. But did I prefer it over other more non-premium silicone-based lubes like ID Millennium and Pjur Man Basic? No. No, I did not.
This year, they’ve changed their bottle and product description on the front of the bottle from saying, “PREMIUM silicone lubricant” to “PREMIUM concentrated lubricant serum.” Fancy! Along with this superficial alteration, tried and true Platinum fans may have noticed a slight ingredient change this year. But don’t fret, because the new 2015 WET Platinum pure silicone formula is just as waterproof, vagina-friendly, anal sex appropriate, hypoallergenic and condom-safe as it was last year– especially since the removal of vitamin E from their list of lube ingredients. It’s even an FDA approved medical device now!
Ingredients: Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethiconol, Phenyl trimethicone
In fact, a lot of changes have been happening in the Platinum line of WET lubes, including a brand new WET Platinum Water-Based lube and a Platinum Sultry Strawberry flavored silicone-based lube, similar but more hypoallergenic to the water-based WET Naturals Sensual Strawberry. We’re gathering information on them now to see if they are soon to be sold by us or not. We’ll let you know!
Along with these changes, they’ve changed the aforementioned container* as well. I despise this new bottle design to the point of becoming audibly enraged over it. Thanks for making me go to the laundromat on my only day off this week, WET– stomp, stomp, stomp. This lube should come with a roll of quarters, some WET Keep it Clean toy cleaner and a laminated copy of “Removing Lube Stains.”
I even had to take special measures for protecting my purse and car upholstery by completely wrapping it up in cellophane prior to bringing it back into work with me today (as shown above). Not a great sign. Did I get a faulty bottle? Perhaps. I consulted our staff and this does seem to be a fluke. But based on my experience, I’d still gladly take a nice and clean pump bottle of Swiss Navy Silicone Lubricant over this problematic bottle design.

*On 2/18/2015 I was presented with the information directly from WET (via our Twitter page) that leakage has been an issue for them with this design. Along with thanking me for my honest review, they informed me that a new cap is already in progress! When the new bottle is completed, they generously offered to send me a replacement bottle with the new cap design as a courtesy. Much thanks, WET! I will report on this new design when it is received.
The body-safe ingredients are great, people do seem to love this lube and it’s very versatile– but between the plethora of dark droplets which now permanently adorn my bedroom decor and the noticeable thinness of the new formula, I’ll take my favorite silicone-based lube from ID over WET Platinum any day of the week.
